Now this is what has happened, we went to a beach on which there was going to be a high tide for two hours which none of us knew. We were stuck as there was only one route to get out of that beach, basically, i couldn't show up to work because we reached there at 9 in morning and left at 4 in the eve. I call up my TL informing i can't come and would do and over time on saturday.
And this is what he says, after knowing that i was stuck there for 8 hours without water or food ( i had a feeling that this doesn;t turn into anything that makes an episode of i should'nt be alive on me :( ) i was totally tanned, and he says,
come to work, doesn't matter, you show up at office, after negotiating with him that i can't come, he says do a full time on saturday which i couldn't because i had lots of personal stuff to do as my dad had rushed home due to his health issue's, he says stuffs like - you are not in school or college, you have to show up and do a full time later he says - i am not asking you, i am telling you that u have to come, and he is constantly commanding that you have to work, now i know this is a long story its too much to read but i couldn't find any other way to put this in front of you guys.
All i want to know that how do i make this jack-*** that i am an employee and not a robot, and its fine if he puts that day as un-paid leave.
Please reply, your suggestions is my statement in front of him.
thanks for reading this all out, by now i am sure you'll need a bud :DNot happy with my Team Leader.?
well, you've made quite a mess of things, regardless of whose fault was it.
now i'm going to give you my opinion, but read the whole thing. take what you feel is good. it's your life.
(1) If you like your job, esp. in this market, I'd go in and do the overtime.
(2) in the future, saying less is more.
if you got stuck on the beach, tell your boss,
"I was involved in a near-accident on water yesterday which has hampered my health to perform at work."
at which point you follow with,
"with your permission, I'd like to take a sick day" (assuming you felt unhealthy due to the near-accident on water)
or. if this beach is quite far, you should have scheduled it on a Friday, and used the weekend, or just taken a vacation day.
(3) now, to be fair with you, who I imagine is quite younger than your boss.
his type can be very....ridiculously didactic. like he probably feels he has to "parent" you or some sh*t like that. and that sucks cause you know it isn't that true but it sticks to your image.
so the basic solution is to get rid of it.
don't fight it. look good in front of your boss. dont' do it again. whent he time is right, and he's happy with your work, switch bosses.
and yes, i do agree he sounds like a pussy, but this is the best solution i came up with, cause he can always fire you, right? (which makes him a total pussy but wtf).
You have to plan your work. Not happy with my Team Leader.?
Wow ... this is a difficult situation. I can understand why you are upset and seeking advise.
I know you think he's an ****** ... but I've been in his situation and it sucks as well. I didn't get to be the nice guy and feel sorry for everyone.
I had a LOT of pressure on me from my management to met the targets they had set for me. So you think your team lead is rough .... he has to report up the chain to a bigger ****** who is even more demanding. He needs the job as well.
I recommend you humble yourself. Apology and express gratitute for being able to make up the time. A commitment that you will call ahead with more notice and take your responsibility more seriously will go a long way. He has the power. You can tell him that if it's easier you are willing to take the day without pay.
This will not be the first ****** you get in your career - so learn to play the game.
If work was fun - they wouldn't pay us to be there. I'm sorry you are in the situation you are in.
You are considered an "AT WILL EMPLOYEE" and if you do not show up at work, you just do not get paid for the time....I do not think that any employee has the right to demand that you "show up" after you have given them the courtesy of calling to say that you will not be in that day.....If your services were not competent enough for them to have you around, then you would have been gone within the first month, so I would not even worry about it.....You did your part by calling, so let him get someone else to come in and work your shift....You have to know how to stand your ground...You have rights too.....Good luck! Not happy with my Team Leader.?
Stuck at the beach due to the high tide. That might be one of the most creative excuses I've ever seen for missing work.
Tides aren't random, by the way, and it's possible to know when they will occur.
You're lucky he gave you the opportunity to make up the hours and didn't just fire you. You sound like you feel it's totally unreasonable for him to expect you to work the hours you're expected to. You can't just say OK, don't pay me for that day. If you aren't willing to work the required hours, I'm sure they can find someone to replace you who will.
Gentlelamb has told you what you want to hear. About the only correct line in her answer is that you are an at-will employee. At will doesn't mean that you can just show up whenever you are willing, and if you don't show, you don't get paid - it means you can be fired at any time.
You need to take responsibility for your actions. You have set your priorities, so now you have to live with them. I have a feeling this is not the first time you have had such an episode. Feel free to tell your team leader he is wrong. Me, I'd fire you for not showing up. If you want to do whatever you want, go into business for yourself, and see what you think when someone tells you the same story.
