Working with depression?

I believe I have suffered depression in episodes the majority of my life, however only this year have I decided to do something about it and 3-4 month ago I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. I was prescribed Citalopram. I had about 4 weeks off with a sick note and prior to that sick days off on my own accord. Since then I have had many sick days despite trying to work full time. I find it so hard and can't concentrate, I'm tired all the time and don't sleep on a night causing me to take these sick days. Also I find it hard to be around people and I gone home from work fearing I am going to have a panic attack and freak out in front of my co-workers.

Now I have been tipped off by a trust-worthy source that I am going to be called into the office and may lose my job. I have accepted this and am ready to quit. Is this better than being fired? And how should I go about it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I am 19.Working with depression?
it sounds to me as though you are in the wrong job.

keep working there, till you find another, its much easier to find a new job while youre still working than while youre unemployed.

or better yet, start your own business. what have you got to lose?

i think you would go great purchasing a website, selling through amazon.

you dont have to deal with people and you work very little, and it will pay the bill plus leave some for lifes little pleasures.

Thanks for Yahooing!

I would wait and talk with your boss and explain that you have been under new medication and working through some problems.

Antidepressants take up to 8 weeks or longer to build up to a therapeutic level and start taking some effect.

QAre you on anything for anxiety or panic attacks?

Sleep is really important in order to function during the day.

Taking life 'one day at a time' is also crucial.

Could you take a leave of absence--or 'family leave' to get yourself back on track?

I have never been on unemployment, but if a doctor has been seeing you, and they fire you, i think you can apply for unemployment. not sure though.

if you quit, you cannot.

best wishes to you.
Do not quit your job. You arent sure that you will lose your job yet. You dont want to quit while your boss still wants you to work there...When you get called into the office, just hope for the best.Working with depression?
Best advice I can give you would be to try to get your head straight and think through things properly. I know it can be hard. I had depression, it was so **** but I'm better now, you just have to try to use your head and make the right decisions and ignore what you are feeling. Eventually things will improve
go into work and ask to speak to your boss(es) and explain the situation. hopefully realizing what you are going through will make them understand and let you keep your job.

i was diagnosed with depression when i was 15 and have been on lexapro for the past six years. that and a lot of will-power got me much happier and healthier. keep going to see your psychiatrist and know that losing your job isn't the end of the world.

take care of yourself and then force yourself to another job and push through! good luck!
Some of those medications can cause a relapse and pull you deeper into depression. Based on patients that I've interacted with, they find life better without the need for pharmaceuticles. Some patients came out of it by discovering something that they like to do that keeps them occupied. Here are some ideas.

1. Exercising daily- This helps with self-esteem and anxiety because it can make you more confident and it is great for releasing stress.

2. Listening to upbeat music.

3. Talking to somebody you trust.

4. Treating yourself to something nice.

Anything is better than being fired. Just explain the situation in a sincere manner. People will appreciate your honesty and respect you more for it.
First of all, you should let your employer know what you are dealing with - they may be able to give you some leeway in that area. In terms of finding another job in the future, it is always better to have quit than to have been fired. When you do talk to your employer, let them know everything, and also let them know that if they can't work something out that works for you (less hours at better times, perhaps), then you will have to leave. As far as panic attacks go, see your doctor about Xanax or Klonopin - those really made a world of a difference for me and my social anxiety. I was diagnosed with general anxiety, social anxiety, and depresssion my freshman year of college. Because I missed and had to drop so many classes for the same reasons you are missing work, I am still a sophomore 5 years later. After years of killing myself trying to do school (which I could not at the time), I decided just to take a year and a half off and simply get better. I am no longer on medication now and am about to finish my first semester back, after which I will be a junior. In the end, I feel that the best cure for mental illness is just to change your state of mind - totally change what is going on in your life and take a break from it all. If you cannot do that, I still recommend cognitive behavioral therapy with a qualified therapist. This will help you change the way you look at the world and can alleviate a significant amount of your stress. If you cannot afford a therapist, the best book out there that you can work through yourself is called Mastery of Your Anxiety and Worry by Craske and Barlow. It really helped me. Also, as a tip for the future, you cannot be fired for mental illness if it is documented by a professional (you have to see a psychiatrist regularly), and most schools have disability programs that allow students with mental illness leeway on missed classes and late assignments. Best of luck in getting better, and do know that it is possible :)
